She said that was likely influenced <br />by the recent influx of Karen refugees. <br />Commissioners noted that even though the district did better than the state average, there are <br />numerous categories where scores were extremely low and being above the statewide average <br />does not reflect well when considering the achievement gap. <br />The committee plans to track statistics from year to year. They will identify the top ten indicators <br />they believe the commission should watch and then make sure the City Council is aware of those <br />trends. <br />Commissioners discussed what these statistics mean to the City. They identified several areas <br />where they would like more information. For example, what parts of the city has the greatest <br />racial diversity, what impact does economic stability have on educational success and what are <br />the housing trends in the city. <br />Commissioner Gary Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Jaeger seconded motion to accept the <br />committee report. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />3d. Financial Report <br />Carolyn Curti reviewed the budget report, acknowledging that it did not reflect the $125 <br />donation from the newly formed Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender North Suburban Friends <br />and Folk (GLBTNSFF). <br />Commissioner Yates asked whether the League of Women Voters $150 donation for the Karen <br />meeting was received. The Commission directed Curti to check on the status of the donation. <br />Commissioner Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Yates seconded motion to accept the <br />committee report. Motion prevailed unanimously. <br />4. Business Items <br />4a. Community Dialogue, Monday, October 25, Skating Center <br />Commissioner Thelma McKenzie has sent an invitation to the 2009 planners and asked for their <br />involvement. She is working to get a planning committee together as soon as possible. <br />Commissioner Grefenberg asked for reassurance that the GLBTNSFF group would be a part of <br />the planning. <br />4b. Essay Contest <br />Carolyn Curti read the 2010-11 essay contest question that was included in the commission <br />packet. "How do Human Rights apply to you and your peers in your schools and community?" <br />
