."Demand " may be too strong a word for our situation. Situated within minutes of St. Paul
and Minneapolis, most Roseville residents have easy access to a myriad of arts activities
of every kind. This is a great asset to Roseville residents, but because it drawspeople out
of the community, it has a somewhat stifling effect on building community and particularly
the arts within the community. By pursuing its mission to involve residents directly in arts
activities, the Roseville Parks and Recreation Department and its partner organizations
have demonstrated that there are many residents who want to be involved closer to home.
Feed back from participants and audiences tells us the need, interest and commitment are
there. Additionally, community surveys have stated the interest in expanding the arts.
Through community surveys, Roseville has also identified the following needs:
-the growth of an aging population that often becomes isolated from the community
as a whole.
-an expansion of a minority population, particularly Southeast Asian, that has not
been included in the community.
-an expanding interest in the arts with a lack of sufficient and appropriate spaces
for performing and display.
. One example of how P&R works with members of the community is the joint venture with
the Roseville Area Arts Council on "Get Roseville Singing" campaign. This project
involves reviving community singing, preserving America's song heritage, and learning the
songs from cultures of Roseville's growing diversity. Everyone is involved in this project
because we all can sing. It insures a variety of experiences because of the richness of the
cultures from which the songs come. "Keep Roseville Singing" is the theme of this year's
Rosefest celebration. Community singing of all kinds is encouraged. The Rose Parade
will feature a corps of singers drawn from all segments of the community. This project,
which will be the development of a multicultural, multigenerational arts festival- "Roseville
Arts Festival" will feature the following art mediums (goal for number of artists in
parenthesis):
-visual art show (40 artists)
-dance festival (60 artists)
-chorus fest (70 artists)
-theater vignettes (60 artists)
The groups involved will be:
Roseville Parks and Recreation Department
Roseville Area Arts Council
Roseville Parks and Recreation Commission
Roseville Human Rights Commission
Roseville Historical Society
Rosetown Playhouse
Roseville Area Schools
Rhymer School of Music
. We identify local arts leaders as those who taken the initiative to create an opportunity for
themselves and others to express and use their artistic talents. One use of this grant will
be to hold a conclave of these leaders to uncover new leaders and ways of working,
performing and creating together to foster a community's access to and involvement in arts
activities.
_ 2 _._
