Department Approval: Item Description REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Manager Reviewed: :�f' A�� DATE: 1 0/08/01 ITEM NO: F-1 Agenda Section: Reports/Recommendations Replacement of Turf Areas Due To Excessive Heat BACKGROUND During this past summer, several turf areas in Roseville parks that had been soded or seeded in 1999 and 2000 have been damaged beyond repair because of the e�reme heat and humidity. Staff thought the grass had rooted sufficiently, but because of the extreme weather conditions this summer the turf could not sustain growth. These areas are not irrigated, and it is difficult to hand irrigate them consistently. The goal would be to have a contractor do the re-seeding and re-sodding this fall while the weather is suitable. The areas and the amounts are as follows: Park Owasso Hills Park -playground & entrance (sod) Pioneer Park (sod) Owasso Fields (seed) Langton Lake - (east entrance) (sod) Skating Center (entrance to Banquet Center) (sod) Miscellaneous Total Amount $8,400 $6,900 $ 830 $2,480 $3,410 713 $22,733 POLICY OBJECTIVE To maintain the appearance of our parks and public areas consistent with community expectations and other spending priorities. FINANCIAL IMPLICATION The total cost is $22,733. The amount is available in the City Contingency Fund, which currently has a balance of approximately $95,000. Staff has considered the cost of installing an irrigation system in the affected areas. Irrigation will continue to be studied and recommended selectively as we refurbish and maintain parks and public turf areas. Seeding is a less expensive alternative to sodding. Seeding is especially suitable for large areas that are not subject to high traffic during initial growth. However, sod is the preferred alternative in smaller, high-traffic and high-visibility areas. The areas recommended for sod
