replacement above fit these criteria inasmuch as these areas are immediately adjacent to
high-visibility public entrance areas, high-traffic playground areas, or trails.
Another alternative is to budget for these expenditures next year for implementation in FY
2003.
Of course, if the weather does not cooperate this fall, we will make some or all of these
improvements next spring with either budgeted or contingency funds. Generally speaking,
sod replacement is preferred in the fall when the weather is more reliably cool and moist;
though the spring can certainly be cool and moist, summer heat can stress new sod when
roots are still tender. However, spring replacement remains a fall-back option.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Based on the extreme weather conditions and the resulting damage and based upon
several public complaints, staff recommends that the dead turf be replaced as soon as
possible. Staff will also hand water the new seed and sod as best we can to give the
greatest opportunity for sustained growth.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED
Motion authorizing the replacement of 7100 yards of sod, which was destroyed because of
the extreme heat, at a cost of $22,733 with the moneys to be taken from the City of
Roseville 2001 Contingency Fund.
