NM I-35W CORRIDOR COALITION
2001 ANNUAL REPORT
and redevelopment issues, operational
and management issues and a whole host
of other subjects. A Coalition task force
determines agendas and members are
asked to provide the leadership
necessary to present issues and/or
projects on a rotating basis.
♦ The Coalition created 2 special Board
task force teams charged with:
1) creating a legislative work plan for
the 2002 session and
2) strategizing on `how the Coalition
should respond to the M&night
Foundations request for additional
information and
3) developing a five year workplan that
identified both member and
Coalition projects, including
associated costs, economic benefits
and funding methodologies.
Mayors Probst, Sonterre, Ryan and
Larson and city managers/administrators
Fraser, Fulton and Beets agreed to serve
on these special Board teams.
♦ Ramsey County funded a pilot mobile
home program with the City of Mounds
View.
♦ The Coalition's Housing Committee
continued its work and made
recommendations to the Board and
member communities to adopt a
common housing maintenance code
using the Shoreview ordinance as a
model.
The Coalition initiated its first GIS
Intern program. The program was
structured in cooperation with North
Hennepin Community College (NHCC).
John Janzen, a student at NHCC was
hired as the first intern. He worked on a
number of special assignments for
member cities. The intern program was
very successful and the Coalition has
elected to expand the program in 2002
under the leadership of its GIS
Coordinator, SCVT and the Coalition's
GIS Task Force.
♦ The Coalition joined the Housing
Minnesota Group.
♦ Excensus LLC has been the Coalition's
demographic consultant for several
years. In 1999, Excensus produced a
unique and detailed base of residential
profiles showing how the Coalition was
growing and changing. In 2000, a
comparable base of employer profiles
was developed. In 2001 this dynamic
base of information was used to support
many of the Coalition's project
initiatives. The following are some
examples:
1) Updated Employment Data: Based
on a detailed analysis of employer
locations and characteristics,
Excensus was able to identify a
significant increase in employment
over previous reports. Current
counts show nearly 100,000 jobs
est today in the Coalition.
2) Resident Worker Underemplovment:
Excensus participated in a project,
funded by the Minnesota Department
of Trade and Economic
Development, the University of
Minnesota's Humphrey Institute and
the I-35W Corridor Coalition, that
provides a detailed picture of the
Coalition's resident labor force, their
skills, and needs. Excensus'
demographic base was used to
construct a large and geographically
dispersed sample of Coalition
workers. These workers were
surveyed and their home-to-work
travel patterns were identified and
mapped by Excensus. This
S
