�1�i <br />� <br />Position Profile — Police Sergeant <br />Date: XXX <br />Position Title: Police Sergeant <br />Department: Police <br />Accountable to: Lieutenant <br />Primary Objective of Position <br />To directly supervise the activities of police officers and others in the areas of patrol, crime prevention, criminal <br />apprehension, training, planning, records, reports, identification, traffic, traffic accident investigation/prevention, <br />public education, public relations, criminaUnon-criminal investigations (both juvenile and adult). <br />Maior Areas of Accountability <br />* 1. Supervises or personally handles arrest situations and procedures, emergency services, traffic law <br />enforcement, legal and judicial activities. Assumes responsibility and accountability for all the action or <br />inaction of persons and events with area of responsibility. <br />*2. Directs and supervises police officers and others by assigning and/or transferring specific duties and work <br />schedules in order to meet the needs of the department and the community. Monitors and approves time <br />cards, attendance, overtime, vacations, holidays, sick lea�e, lea�es of absence, etc. <br />3. Rewards employees for excellent performance through commendations and desirable work assignments. <br />Disciplines employees whose performance/actions are inconsistent with sound law enforcement practices <br />or Department policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, using oral or written reprimands, suspensions, <br />and recommendations for discharge. <br />4. Hears first level grievances and attempts to resolve problems, where possible, in accordance with <br />department and City policy and sound law enforcement practices. <br />*5. Plans and evaluates programs and personnel, and recommends performance standards and programs. <br />Remains knowledgeable of the functions and responsibilities of subordinates in order to advise, assist, and <br />instruct. Supervises, recommends, prepares, and conducts appropriate training for subordinates. <br />*d. Conducts inspections to assure assignments are carried out in accordance with departmental standards: <br />A. Personnel and equipment are clean, neat, and in the best possible condition to perform their <br />functions. <br />B. Reports are clear and concise. <br />C. Complaints of any nature are followed up thoroughly and efficiently. <br />D. Members of the public are dealt with fairly and impartially. <br />7. Conducts and oversees interviews of witnesses and suspects, and assures all persons are treated fairly, <br />impartially, and in compliance with the United States constituhonal protechons. <br />
