Roseville Human Rights Commission
Minutes April 13, 2010
Commissioner Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Oftelie seconded motion to add the
following language to the HRC's webpage.
"The Commission welcomes visitors to its monthly meetings. There is always an opportunity for
public comment on the agenda.
The Commission also welcomes ideas and volunteers to work with it in furthering the cause of
Human Rights in Roseville. If you would like to volunteer please contact the Commission by e-
mail or call Carolyn Curti at 612 792 7026."
Commissioners discussed how volunteers would be used. Discussions ranged from not knowing
yet to program planning.
Commissioner Grefenberg renewed his motion. Motion prevailed unanimously.
3c. Data Geeks Subcommittee
Nothing to report.
3d. Financial Report
Commissioners reviewed the April financial report. They sought clarification on the LMHRC
"Due" in December. Commissioner McKenzie said that was likely a typo and should read
"Dues." It is the dues the City pays to be a member of the state League of Minnesota Human
Rights Commissions. Each commission is assessed an amount based on population. This amount
is separate from the conference attendance fees for the MDHR conference.
4. Business Items
4a. Update on May 8 Dialogue for New Americans/Karen Community
Commissioner Barb Yates reviewed the memo provided by Community Relations Coordinator
Sarah Mahmud. The dialogue is set for Saturday, May 8 at 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Roseville
Lutheran Church. Chair Singleton is asked to do the welcome followed by a panel discussion.
The goals are to build relationships and hit on topics that everyone feels comfortable discussing.
Commission Kennedy clarified that the memo misstated the gang issue. The Karen youth are not
involved in gangs, rather as they mimic others in an attempt to adopt American customs they
may be adopting some gang symbols, which would lead to misunderstandings. She sees this
dialogue as a good opportunity to explain this to families.
Commissioners Yates and Kennedy said the dialogue is an opportunity for Roseville Police and
Fire to learn about the Karen culture as much as Karen learning about American culture.
