Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes December 11, 2007 <br />Page 4 of 5 <br />Commissioner McGehee moved and Commissioner Venters seconded approval of Commissioner <br />Bosch to serve as Vice Chairperson of the HRC, serving for one year, beginning immediately, <br />and to October of 2008. Motion carried 7/0/0. <br />Update on Essay Contest <br />Additional essays were distributed and timetable reviewed by Commissioners. <br />Reflection on Ethics Training <br />A brief discussion was held on the Ethics Training held the previous evening. <br />Commissioner McKenzie said it was a good presentation representing different perspectives and <br />led to an excellent discussion. Commissioner Oftelie agreed saying many useful materials were <br />provided. <br />City Manager Malinen agreed to provide additional information on the statute referenced by the <br />City Attorney and the policy on informal and formal advisory opinions. <br />Continue Discussion of Diversity/Race Forum <br />Discussion was held regarding the Grand Rapids diversity and race training; advantages in peer <br />training for the Police Department and different levels of law enforcement; POST Board credit <br />consideration; potential speakers to address diversity on the job; time required to set up a training <br />program (i.e., county -wide; mandatory Peace Officer attendance during the two -day training; <br />shift requirements; planning; duplication of the Grand Rapids process and plan; advertising); and <br />the need for a staff person to assist the HRC in setting up the training. <br />Commissioner Bosch expressed enthusiasm in pursuing this program after a year of discussion. <br />City Manager Malinen offered his assistance to the HRC to formulate the training program. <br />Venters moved, Bosch seconded, that the HRC further investigate providing a diversity training <br />program involving law enforcement officers and recognizing the HRC's commitment to pursue <br />this training in 2008; with further discussion to be held and additional information provided at <br />the January 2008 meeting to allow for more formal organization, division of tasks, how to <br />involve federal, county and city law enforcement officials; and logistics for implementation. <br />Motion carried 7/0/0. <br />Sharing Local Human Rights Events; 2007 Human Rights Day Conference <br />Commissioners Oftelie and McKenzie provided an update on their attendance at the State <br />meeting. They shared numerous ideas and encouraged review of the materials along with <br />developing plans and commitments to carry through on opportunities. <br />Commissioners agreed they space at City Hall for reference information. <br />Commissioner Venters volunteered to ask the City's official newspaper to publish Dr. Martin <br />Luther King Jr.'s Nobel Peace Prize speech commemorating his January 21 irthday. <br />
