City of <br />lei <br />Minnesota, USA <br />Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes <br />December 09, 2008 <br />Present: Chair David Singleton; Commissioners Janet Delmore; Thelma McKenzie; Tam <br />McGehee; Bob Venters, Philip Crump <br />Excused: Commissioners Marie Oftelie <br />Others: City Manager Bill Malinen; Richard Flesher; Recording Secretary Sheila Stowell <br />Call to Order: Chair David Singleton called the Human Rights Commission (HRC) <br />meeting to order at approximately 7:00 p.m. <br />City Manager Malinen distributed materials from the Ethics Training Forum for those unable to <br />attend. <br />Amend Agenda <br />Chair Singleton suggested amendment of the agenda including budget review, public comment, <br />2009 strategic plans /goals and announcements. The agenda, as amended, was approved. <br />Review of Forum on Race/Diversity <br />Commissioner McKenzie provided notes from the debriefing /dialogue held at the HRC meeting <br />of November 13, 2008. <br />Commissioner McKenzie said she was continuing to meet with United Way representatives to <br />review the Forum; and she sought comment on how to improve future events. <br />Commissioner McKenzie asked that staff send thank yous to attendees and to the planning team. <br />Commissioner McKenzie will follow up with the United Way and the League of Women Voters <br />for a second dialogue. <br />Richard Flesher, Roseville resident at 2774 Huron Street and former HRC Commissioner <br />Mr. Flesher addressed the HRC for their assistance in preventing the deportation of part of his <br />Ethiopian neighbor. Mr. Flescher wasn't sure what assistance the HRC could provide, but sought <br />their input and suggestions and asked that the HRC stand behind Roseville citizens when there <br />were Human Rights issues. <br />Mr. Flesher reviewed the situation; Mr. Flesher said there were a number of issues complicating <br />the situation (i.e., unemployment, children not currently confined, and attending school, fugitive <br />status of the father, mother and daughter). Mr. Flesher said the family was living in a housing <br />units owned by the Metropolitan Council. <br />
