Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes – August 11, 2009 <br />Page 2 of 6 <br /> <br />Schools and Rotary Club; estimated total budge t for the event for f ood and facilitator(s) <br />of approximately $1,000; and review of last year’s revenue sources and expenditures for <br />comparison purposes. <br /> <br />Discussion included proposed speakers, including former HRC Commissioners; <br />representation from the Latino and/or Karen community; request by Member Kennedy <br />that speakers be Roseville residents and clar ification by Ms. Curti th at various ethnicities <br />were representing those living, worki ng or attending school in Roseville. <br /> <br />Member Kennedy reiterated her request that speakers represent the community’s broad <br />diversity, beyond ethnicity. <br /> <br />Planning Committee members asked that sugg estions be provided to the Planning <br />Committee for consideration. Ms. McKenzie advised that a written report will be e- <br />mailed to HRC members following the next Pl anning Committee meeting, to provide an <br />update on planning and speaker selections, fo r review at the Se ptember HRC meeting. <br /> <br />Discussion included timing of speakers. <br /> <br />Chair Singleton thanked the Plan ning Committee for their work. <br /> <br />III. Discussion of Reorganizat ion of Commission – new chair and members, strategic <br />plan and goal setting – in preparation fo r September meeting with City Council <br />Member Yates provided a bench handout dated August 11, 2009, with suggested <br />language to revise the HRC’s Strategic Plan to incor porate new ordinance language <br />regarding the purpose and duties of the HRC. <br /> <br />Members Yates and Grefenberg had worked on the language and recommended deleting <br />the “Police-Civilian Review Commission” se ction of the Strategi c Plan, and replace it <br />with the proposed language: <br /> Fostering community through inclusive, welcoming, responsive neighborhoods <br />and city government <br />A) Develop a process to assess city governmen t activities, programs and services for <br />accessibility so that city activities, pr ograms and services may be understandable <br />and responsive to a diverse citizenry. <br />B) Develop a process to monitor statisti cal and other data trends. Use the <br />information to create a set of recomme ndations for the City Council. The purpose <br />of the set of recommendations is to encourage mutual understanding among our <br />citizens about the community’s diversity. <br />C) Develop programs and recommendations fo r the Council to encourage and assist <br />in the development of neighborhood groups, forums, and networks in order to <br />provide residents with a sense of bel onging and facilitate effective citizen <br />engagement. <br />
