Roseville Human Ri ghts Commission <br />Meeting Minutes – January 13, 2009 <br />Page 3 of 4 <br /> <br />street projects; NNO; safety issu es); and how to involve young peopl e in the process, since they <br />would become tomorrow’s community leaders. <br /> <br />City Manager Malinen shared his experiences from the City of Lynwood , WA and their HRC’s <br />role in recognizing the community’s diversity more formally and embracing it and recognizing <br />different language and cultures. <br /> <br />City Manager Malinen used one example of providi ng disposal cameras to youth to go into their <br />families and neighborhoods to document their cultures, food, dress and family traditions; <br />followed by a photo contest, display, and panel disc ussion with parents attending to engage that <br />enthusiasm and move it forward in a more positive way. <br /> <br />Commissioner consensus was very en thusiastic of this concept. <br /> <br />Chair Singleton arrived at this time. <br /> <br />Discussion continued regarding the photo idea for with suggestions to have pictures taken during <br />the school year and then turn City Hall into an art gallery to garner cultural interest and <br />community enthusiasm and interest in the idea of a Cultural Fair, incorporat ing as part of the <br />Rosefest, possibly including c oncerts at Central Park repr esenting various ethnic groups. <br /> <br />Commissioner Delmore ask City Manager Malinen if City staff was con tinuing their diversity <br />training; with City Manager Malinen responding affirmatively. <br /> <br />City Manager Malinen advised that if the H RC was supportive of facilitating this Neighborhood <br />Enhancement and Diversity, the HRC’s charge a nd mission statement needed to be revised and <br />formalized for consideration by the City Council. <br /> <br />Additional discussion included part nering with other agencies and groups (i.e., United Way; and <br />School Diversity Coordinators). <br /> <br />Approve Minutes of Nove mber 13, 2008 and December 9, 2008 <br />With a quorum available, meeting minutes were reconsidered for action. <br /> <br />Member McGehee moved, seconded by Member Singleton, approval of the December 9, 2008 <br />meeting minutes as amended. Motion carried 4/0/1 (Oftelie) <br /> <br />Correction (Singleton): <br /> Page 2, Line 33, correct reference to Chair Singl eton’s experience with th e “St. Paul,” rather <br />than the “Minneapolis,” Police Department’s CRB. <br /> <br />*While there was no quorum of applicable memb ers in attendance at tonight’s meeting to <br />approve the November 13, 2008 meeting minut es; those attending tonight’s meeting <br />acknowledged that those minutes were correct as presented; by motion of Member McGehee, <br />seconded by Chair Singleton. *Motion carri ed 3/0/3 (Delmore; Venters; Crump). <br />
