Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes – September 08, 2009 <br />Page 4 of 5 <br /> <br />Ms. Curti advised that she could draft the application and e-mail it to members for their review <br />prior to submission. <br /> <br />Commissioners expressed support in a third annual forum. Memb er Yates provided suggestions <br />for future forums (i.e., Neighborhood House) in furthering and e ngaging other cultural <br />opportunities to address the changi ng face of Roseville and impacts to the community. Member <br />Yates said in her experience people were genuinely interested in receiving information on other <br />cultures; and suggested that s eeking additional cooperative and partnering opportunities with <br />such groups may be the next natural step for the HRC. <br /> <br />Discussion included the HRC’s goal in getting further into neighborhoods to determine their <br />various representations; how to bu ild on partnerships and develop cu ltural information to create <br />better understanding between cultures. <br /> <br />Member Kennedy spoke in support of the re putation and quality of Neighborhood House <br />programming that could provide content to the context, as well as information resources. <br /> <br />Chair Singleton suggested that the Forum Planni ng Subcommittee consider this information and <br />provide a recommendation to the full HRC. <br /> <br />Member Grefenberg expressed his concern in ad dressing not only cultural , but other forms of <br />diversity, in the community; and questioned if the cu ltural complementary model should be the <br />focus for future forums; further whether ev ery norm in all cultures be accommodated. <br /> <br />Discussion continued regarding cu ltural and lifestyle diversity. <br /> <br />Member Jaeger opined that it was more productive to be proactive rather th an reactive in any of <br />these issues, with the goal focusing on civic engagement. <br /> <br />Member Jaeger moved, seconded by Member Kennedy, approving submission of Minnesota <br />Department of Human Rights Pr oject grant, funds proposed fo r use in developing capacity <br />building or implementing civic engagement in Rose ville; with the final project to be further <br />detailed and developed by th e HRC upon award of funding. <br /> <br />Motion carried: all Ayes: 7/0. <br /> <br />VI. Other <br />Member Grefenberg addressed recent alleged discrimination activities in the Anoka-Hennepin <br />School District by certain teaching staff; and s ought input from individua l HRC members related <br />to local school district provisions. <br /> <br />Member Kennedy, in her role with Roseville Area Schools; and Member Yates, in her role with <br />the MN Department of Education, noted the ex tensive and ongoing equity training and guidance <br />in decision-making for all programming and staffing.
