Regular City Council Meeting
Monday, March 21, 2011
Page 15
given the need to respect classified and personal information and data privacy is-
sues.
Mayor Roe noted the City Council's interest in the initiative, and questioned if
their adoption of this resolution would serve to get the process started and the
program in the public eye, and provide coordination between the number of or-
ganizations currently providing services to military families in Roseville and
throughout Ramsey County.
Councilmember Pust expressed concern with the current resolution language as
drafted, opining that there needed to be more community discussion, which
should happen by those attending or watching the meeting tonight, or any of its
rebroadcasts, and encouraged interested citizens to contact City Hall or City
Councilmembers, as well as community organizations who may have leaders will-
ing and able to take on the administrative side of things. Councilmember Pust as-
sured all that she was very supportive of the program's goals, but wanted to make
sure a framework and accountability system was in place prior to adopting a reso-
lution of support, rather than adopting the ordinance and having it fall through the
cracks.
Councilmember McGehee concurred with Councilmember Pust, noting that it was
not as simple as passing a resolution, when volunteers may be forthcoming, but
no leaders or administrators. Councilmember McGehee suggested that the City's
various media sources be used to determine interest and response of citizens prior
to proceeding further.
Councilmember Pust offered her willingness to speak to organizations in the
community and to serve as an interim point person for interested parties to contact
over the next month as interest was determined; at which time she could report
back to the City Council, and then a resolution of support could be adopted based
on that level of interest.
Mayor Roe suggested that anyone else on the City Council could also get in-
volved at their discretion.
Councilmember Johnson opined that there was nothing wrong in adopting the
resolution tonight; further opining that it would show the City Council's interest
in moving forward, sending a clear message to potential volunteers that the City
was committed, but recognizing the need to be fluid on that commitment based on
the level of support coming forward. Councilmember Johnson expressed his sup-
port of Councilmember Pust as interim point person.
Johnson moved, Roe seconded, adoption of Resolution No. 10885 (Attachment C)
entitled, "A Resolution Supporting the Efforts to Create a Yellow Ribbon Com-
munity;"to support local military members and their families.
