6) JIM LEWIS
929 Transit Ave. W. E-mail: j-Lewis @bethel.edu
Cover Letter: Attached please find my application.
Why are you interested in serving on a city Task Force exploring civic
engagement in Roseville?
In assessing my responsibilities as a citizen, I have had a growing dissatisfaction
with the extent of my involvement in civic affairs. When I was informed by my
pastor, David Smith, of the soon-to-be-formed committee, I felt it was time I get
off the side-lines. I don't know if this is the right slot for me. I will look forward
to a time to learn more and then decide.
After reading the statement on the proposed "Civic Engagement" committee I
note it is an extension of the Human Rights Commission. I am especially
interested in human rights issues and have done some work in this area in
international settings.
Describe your current and past experience in civic engagement issues and
efforts, including but not limited to your community involvement in Roseville.
I have lived in Roseville nearly eight years and only once or twice have I attended
any formal public fora. When I lived in another city, I was a member of a sub-
committee of the City Zoning Commission (I believe it was devoted to considering
requests for variances in the building code). Other than this, I have no
experience in city governance and public policy affairs except my personal
attempt to keep abreast of issues immediately affecting my residential
experience.
Summarize special skills and qualifications you have acquired from
employment or previous community work which may be useful in the Task
Force's work.
In my work as an academic at four institutions of higher education, I have served
with untold committees which have been tasked with a variety of higher
education issues. Beyond this, I served with two accrediting bodies in several
voluntary positions for the Association of Theological Schools (ATS), Pittsburgh,
PA and with the North Central Association's (NCA) Higher Learning Commission,
Chicago, which accredits colleges, schools and universities in eighteen Midwest
states. As a consultant-evaluator I served as team member, chair of teams, and
member of the NCA Review Commission. I retired from my work with these
associations in 2005 but continue to work as a professional consultant in higher
education, most recently in Fall 2010.
Program Planning Committee Report to the May 10. 2011, Roseville Human Rights Commission 13 -
Meeting
