MR. JAMES FOLEY: Like I said, the main reason I'm here is -
I signed that petition not knowing - live never been to a Council
meeting before - that's my fault - not knowing how the percentage
of signers was going to affect the vote, or possibly affect the
vote. If that was the case, I would not have signed it. The
street is fine where I am. I like to look (inaudible) regardless
of 29 or 30 feet. My concern is - I would not have signed the
petition had I know what I have seen here tonight.

MAYOR DEMOS: Let me just say this. I hope when you hear
other people talk about things like this that you pass the word
out. When you sign a petition, you are committing this Council
to a feasibility study, which costs plain, hard tax dollars.
I wish you people wouldn't sign just to be signing, because you're
costing all of us money.

MR. JAMES FOLEY: That's why I only signed it once. There
was another one that came out - I didn't sign that one.

MAYOR DEMOS: Anyone else from Merrill Street?

MR. STEVE RESLER, 278B Merrill Street: My wife was up here
earlier, so if you Ire counting, you don't have to count us twice.
I am the individual that is responsible for circulating the peti-
tion on Merrill Street against the street improvement. I would
like to say that according to the figur~s up here that were pre-
sented by Mr. Honchell (inaudible) the majority of the people are
against the improvement on Merrill Street and I hope that the
majority would rule in a democratic society like ours. Also, I
would like to take this opportunity to say that when I contacted
the individual home owners, many of the people who signed the
original petition taken out from the City for the improvement,
indicated to me that they had subsequently changed their minds.
If they are in attendance at this hearing tonight, I wish they
would come forward and request that their name be taken off the
petition for the improvement and have it added to the petition
against it. Thank you.

MAYOR DE110S:Anyone else from Merrill?

~MRS. MARY REED, 2726 Merrill: I've found this hearing very
interesting. I guess I have a hard time understanding how the
Council is up there supporting something when they are supposed
to be there listening (inaudible). We've been advised in many
ways of things that we ought not do, and that seems very
interesting to me in the process that is going on. I'm opposed
to the proposal and I guess one of the reasons that I am is that
I look at that street, I see the trees, and I guess I recognize
that Dutch Elm disease might get these trees. I'm not so sure
that that's a valid reason to cut them down tomorrow if it
doesn't come for a while. The other thing - I look at the number
of children - I look at my son, who is now older - and very
frankly, it's a lot easier for him to get back on the grass if
there's not a curb to jump. I fear when he's riding his
bicycle out in places where he cannot get back up onto my
property or onto someone elses or could bounce off a curb into
a car. I don't see at this point, that in our suburban area,

10
